Summer Feeling: Goodbye Two Piece?

As summer rolls in with sunshine and friendship bracelets, one question drifts to the surface like a pool float: Is the two-piece still having its girlhood moment—or is it time to make room for something a little more timeless?

I’ll never forget when my mom took me to J.CREW to get my first Tankini. If you don’t know what a tankini is, let me introduce you to the worlds most lame version of a two-piece. With an inch of your stomach showing, let’s just say the good old tankini was a glorified one piece that made you feel edgy, but really you were just “that” late-blooming, awkward eleven year old. Coming from the kid who wore speedo’s her whole life. Needless to say, I was thrilled about my tankini. I wore that periwinkle suit until the summer of 8th grade when it was brought to my attention the back was becoming see-through.

As someone who navigated girlhood with rebellious undertones and a rather eager sense of style, I have come to admire and champion what is classic. I realized midway through high school in order to develop an elevated sense of style, one has to understand how to dress timelessly. So naturally I took notes from Ralph Lauren scrolling polo.com for hours on end. I learned from Lilly Pulitzer that color is queen and dressing modestly makes powerful impressions. Then of course I studied Princess Diana, a sophisticated icon who epitomized feminine fairytale x rebel. I may or may not copy lady Di this summer and wear an oversized cute t-shirt with my Waverly baseball cap to the beach.

In a world eager to bare all and abandon the beauty of subtlety, I can’t help but think—it’s time we elevate the standard, not lower the bikini bottom?

Would you rather wear something with a story—or something that’ll be out of style by next month? The world needs more girls embracing their story. Your story is a masterpiece created by God to communicate His beauty, His creativity, His originality, all through the uniqueness that is you! And here is a tip: start by elevating your standards by stepping into, timeless.

Here is a mood board to inspire you!

For now I’ll be dreaming about my late afternoon swims, a navy blue one piece with black stitching, perfectly rounded sunglasses and a Shirley temple in hand!

Love you, M
